Bellhousing silicone type bungs

Post by badgerfax »

I have just swapped the input shaft over for the GTi conversion and when I have come to bolt up the bellhousing noticed there white and black bungs in the bolt holes. Most are pretty ropy and stopping the bolts going through.

Are these bungs necessary?

Also there was silicone type sealant smeared around the gearbox. I have cleaned this off now, surely fitting A new gasket should mean silicone is not required?

Bearing in mind the gearbox is going to Aidan's in October for a rebuild and will only be used for a few months....... if I get the engine working :rofl

Hope someone can advise :ok

Simplest explaination: just blobs of silicone forced down the holes from the last assembly maybe?

That was my thought, did look 'manufactured' to me tho.

I take it silicone is not usually needed. Don't want to squidge a load in and the cause problems for Aiden later on.

Non-acid cure sealant like Dirko or Reinzosil. Not bathroom sealant or you will have rusty gears and worse!
