Strange noise - under load

1.9 MTDi Passat 1J type engine - syncro

I havnt had chance to investigate it at any length but in the last 2 days i've been hearing a 'noise'

It happens only when engine is under load of accelerating (it goes quiet when cruising).
Power doesn't seem to have been effected

The noise is like a wooshing of air (but not clean wooshing if that makes it any clearer!! ) i'd also compare it to the sound a road tyre makes when it's travelling over very smooth wet tarmac.

very easily heard.

My early thoughts are that maybe the exhaust is starting to blow (but it doesnt sound bassy enough) or that its the turbo 'leaking' if that's possible.


I'll crawl under it tomorrow and pretend I know what i' looking at but I thought I'd throw it open to the experts first.

Yes, it's sorted.

It was a broken jubilee clip on one of the hoses into the intercooler, when the pressure got up it was blowing out the pipe!

A new clip and all good.

Ah that's not too bad then. Could have become a nightmare to diagnose!
