Can you?
Before you take the pizz, please know I'm no mechanic. I see guys doing all manners of wonderfull things to their VW engines with replacement this and an engine from that and it's all great to see these finished items work!! My question is can you cross breed engines for example ford mondeo tdci turbo onto a 1z engine or even an aaz. I maybe over complicating things in my mind but surly a turbo is a turbo right. Add a manifold adapter and pipe up the oil and air feeds and stuff. It's not really something I would do to my van I just wanted to know if it could be done and if not why? Is there loads of crazy calculations you needs to do or is it about simple adapters to bolt one thing to another? Cheers Jonnyoffcas

Re: Can you?
Basically anything could be made to fit, its just weather or not its worth the time and effort. With turbos, bigger isnt all ways best as depends on the internals of the engine and if it will take the bigger boost etc

Re: Can you?
The main issye youre going to face is that the 1Z is a waswastegate unit, whereas the mondy TDCi is a variable vane geometry one, same as the VNTs fitted to the AFN, ASV etc.
The wastegate uses positive pressure for the valve and the VNT uses a vacuum to pull the ring around inside. No reason why you couldnt knock up a hybrid VNT using pressure instead, would be a bit of a chore to get right though.
Dave.
