Brake calipers

Post by Choppski »

Hi guys

I've just changed one of my front, right, calipers as I has suspected a sticky piston. My question is do I need to change the left one too I.e. Change as a pair?

It was teves style on an air cooled wedge if that makes a difference. I also used a DOT 4 fluid to top up with.

Thanks for any comment!

I don't think so. One of mine stuck on and I replaced it. As long as the other side works why would you need to?

Some might say if one seized then the other won't be far behind...however, whilst its free and moving there will be no difference in performance between the two. I would be tempted to pull the pads and push back the piston/pistons, just clean up the slots and refit the pads with a smear of plastilube on the edges and backing plates...to ensure everything is moving freely like the new one.

Discs always, pads always but callipers no... as CD suggests, just check for correct working operation.

Great advice guys.
I might add..
Seizing calliper pistons, in my experience for anyone who has searched and found this.
Brake fluid is hygroscopic (it absorbs water) so it has to be changed completely on a regular basis
Because?
well.. water rusts iron, and under your seal in the calliper is usually where it starts, this pushes the seal too far onto the piston and causes it to stick.
The other reason is water boils at a lower temp than Dot 4 fluid, so if your on your way down hill and your on the pedal hard, brake fade will ensue as the water boils away.
