Whats worse than a jubilee clip for fuel line?

I'm in the process of swapping to AGG so going to update my rusty water pipes with nice shiny stainless ones from brickworks. So the tank had to be dropped and was surprised to find:

I have receipts for this new fuel tank from the previous owner, was not a cheap job either.

Can anyone recommend paint to protect the tank whilst its out. I hear Hammerite is not the best stuff to use.

I used a zinc primer - mine came primed already from Brickwerks but I gave it an extra layer - and then finished with three coats of rustoleum. Don't see why hammerite would be bad? Can anyone else confirm?

they are just the breather hoses, iirc they are not joined from the factory just interference fit pipes in the rubber hose

Correct. In fact when I replaced the ones the other end (ie at the vent tanks under the arches), I just used good quality fuel hose rather than braided and they're a push fit as well.

Well I stand corrected, They were the breather pipes. Thought I smelled a bodge but it was just petrol fumes!


Did wonder why they didn't fit proper clips. The main line and return were small jubilee clips and the fuel filter was barely plugged in as the pipe was too short.


As I have got the tank out I was going to replace the breather pipes. Does The Brickworks kit include the breathes. Looks to me like its just the flow & return.

I painted my new tank with Rustoleum, then covered it all with underseal. I didn't secure the sender properly, and it leaked the first time I filled it up, and that's when I discovered that Rustoleum doesn't resist petrol! I stripped it all down and repainted it with a rattle can from a motor factors.

Of course, if you put it all back together properly and it never leaks petrol, you'll be fine with Rustoleum.

Simoniz engine laquer is petrol resistant, I always use it on iron blocks.

Rustoleum not affected by petrol once fully hardened (I know this because I've had a few splillages round petrol filler) but underseal soaked in petrol would certainly react with rustoleum, even more so if it was still slightly soft underneath.

Hydraulic fluid soon wrecks it especially if it hasn't hardened fully.

a jar of brake fluid is great for stripping old dinky toys. obviously remove the tyres and don't do any with windows and interiors.

It is quite good as a penetrating oil when used on hot items if you have run out of Plus-gas.
