sluggish aaz

hi all.

Not happy with my sluggish aaz, so considering doing a few diesel pump mods.

read up on the old wiki what i need to do.

Firstly anyone done mods and got any tips, so i dont completely balls it up.

Secondly suggested need to fit boost gauge and regulator??? where do i tap into the system for this.

also any other advise to squeeze a few more ponies, out of aaz lump without turning it into a molten mess.

It shouldn't be sluggish. There is probably a fault that needs sorting before any pump mods.
Firstly, is the pump timing correct? Then is LDA working? Any air leaks losing boost pressure or signal to LDA?
Obvious one, but getting full throttle?
Once all checked, the first and easiest mod is to fit the more aggressive Rover boost pin. Brickwerks sell them.

When i say sluggish i mean more top end to be honest.

responds well to 45 mph lovely turbo whistle, then performance drops off though to max 60mph. Just want a bit more from it for motorway.

The pump was fitted by a local VW garage but not sure with regards timing, i know you need a dial gauge which i don't have. is there another method???

thinking about a trip to devon to see reg the pump man.

Definitely down on power, or revving flat out with too low gearing? I had a syncro hitop with aaz which would happily reach 70mph with a little bit left.
The turbo whistle should be faintly discernible, not loud. Which manifolds/turbo/exhaust did they use for conversion? Do you have JX inlet manifold with wrong shape ports, and if so is the whistle really a leak? Is exhaust cut n shut welded up restricting bodge, or standard JX?
A few things there that might rob your power at the top end.

Sounds like you have problems, I would fix the problems first before you go modifying anything.

Yep...as above...I have a hitop AAZ and have hit a genuine 80mph in the past...ok I was looking behind me waiting for the big white cloud but it can do it..only mod I have is a boost pin from a gtd.


Look at timing...both pump and cam. Check your inlet tract is not leaking or restricted too.

A AAZ van is never going to be fast but on a cold night I'm actually amazed how quick I can rattle away from the traffic lights in mine.

My doner engine was was from a known car..I had serviced it many times since it was new and it had been driven in a normal manner but was an estate golf....with 168000 miles on it! I did the head gasket, de gunged the valves etc and that's was it...so these engines do go the distance if looked after but still no match for a tdi.

so, running on a aaz turbo, with aaz inlet manifold D shape, paired to jx exhaust manifold, with jx exhaust, which after closer inspection isn't great (will replace)
Anyone know quality supplier..?
cam timing tdc, so is pump. pump was pro fitted but not sure on dial setting 0.8 or 1mm that he used. old vw and audi specialist see knew what he was doing.

Assume between air filter and turbo system should be sealed, is there a way to check?

may well just replace all air hoses, have all ready done water for the conversion, but got a little skint and had to reuse a few things.

i am obviously losing boost somewhere or the pump is not generating boost which kinder leads me to my initial thread, boost gauges..

Am still thinking its worth fitting one but dont know how???

Any more input would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,if you don't want a permant boost gauge,buy one that uses a thin pressure pipe [mechanical ] and run the pipe from the pipe on the inlet manifold to a gauge in the cab [you'll need a long bit of pipe!!

Check the little vacume hose connected between the LDA and inlet manifold. Mine has come off a couple of times and makes the van feel down on power.

Well it's got to that time of year again have been mainly pootleing around over winter so didn't really open it up. So before I went to France last year put on new exhaust as old one appeared to have more rust than steel. All air intakes are clear and sealed, diesel pump timing is bang on. He is rather nippy iN low gears. Just stops accelerating at 60/65 max with a good wind behind. Am know thinking maybe gearing?? Any ideas please help.

Could just be gearing? What box do you have in it? If like mine you have the 1.6na gearbox, you will struggle to top 70mph without revving it to bits.
