Hi chap, a similar sender was fitted to all VAG TDI's up to ~98 (depends on model), so there's plenty out there in scrapyard cars etc. the main problem is they're usually tucked up in the pedal box and a PITA to remove. Cars with auto trans had one more pin on the sender but it is compatible.

Is yours faulty ?

Thanks andy, this is turning into a bit of a saga. Originally the van failed and would start ok and but only rev to 1500 very slowly, so upon inspection the return fuel line was leaking and the diesel pump had a crack in it and was leaking a lot of fuel. So it's just had the following, new diesel pump return fuel line, whilst it was in bits water pump cam belt kit power steering belt and a couple of oil seals. It was put all back together and started fine and and drove fine then went back to only revving to 1500 again  so with all that work back to square one, which made me think it could be a faulty potentiometer but not entirely sure, apparently the part number on the potentiometer is a discontinued number and relates to a left hand drive model as my van was converted in Germany. Really struggling here, is it common for them to fail?

MANY THANKS..

Don't you have any fault codes or GP lamp flashing ?

The symptoms could be caused by an engine-management problem. With VAGCOM/VCDS you can conform correct operation or otherwise of the thottle pot.

The potentiometer is exactly the same part I've been looking for for my converted Westy, with very little success. Found one on eBay from Spain which turned out to be dud. There seem to be plenty from Poland, but nothing new which is what I'd prefer...nothing from Europarts, etc!

Our van's accelerator stopped revving in the rain until liberally applying vaseline/WD40, but on Friday she stopped when the wife and 2yr old were on their wya home in the dry. 1st chance to lift the engine cover tonight and cable seems really slack...booked into see Andy @ http://www.thevwcentre.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; tomorrow who will hopefully work his magic!
cheers
Jiminez

If you get a sudden inability to rev or a high contant idle this isn't necessarily the throttle sender, it could be 'limp-home mode' caused by an engine management fault. The ECU should be checked for fault codes. In Stephens case it sounds like the needle-lift sender on injector 3 was faulty.
