Wouldn't hurt to keep an eye out just incase.

Local garage was telling me that a few years back they fitted a brand new VW WBX into the back of a T25 and then noticed it just sat on the guys drive and never moved. Some time later they made him an offer for it but he didn't want to sell. Some time later still, they saw it being picked up by a scrap yard.

So somewhere out there is a brand spanker sitting in a breakers yard. That'd be a good find!

When did VW stop making replacement WBXs? Don't they still make them in Mexico or is that only air cooled units?

If you carnt find a good used engine why not fit an in line VW petrol engine.Plenty of choice fitted to sharans passats & golfs.A T25 diesel engine bar and sump required and fabricated exhaust pipe from the manifold to a
silencer. Plus ECU needed Others may disagree but its straight forward to install requires some mechanical ability if done your
self.Low mileage engines are cheap as chips complete cars are a good option.

which cylinder?

No. 1 was the soft(ish) cylinder. That is the one on the right nearest the front of the van. Is this significant?

No. 1 is the most common.
due to the design of the coolant flow.
No.1 tends to get hotter than the others.
