white smoke on first of the day start up

Post by sternal »

I've noticed for a while now that when starting the van for the first time when its not been used for a day or week that it emits a puff of white smoke and is a bit lumpy a rev on the go faster pedal cures the lumpiness and the white smoke is gone.

rest of the day starts fine no smoke or lumpiness

Glow plugs changed a few months back

Im not overly concerned should I be ? Whats causing it ? Can overfilling of oil cause this ?

The symptoms indicate a glow plug on its way, if your sure they have all been replaced with good quality ones then check that the bus bar is in good condition glow plugs draw a lot of power so the bus bar needs to be perfect also make sure the power lead is on no 2 or 3.

Would be worth checking the voltage on the bus bar as well.

Just remember that if this problem progresses and the glow plugs stop working that the engine wont start from cold so its better to get it sorted now.

Another thought it could be air getting in the injectors have a good check of the leak off pipes between the injectors and replace it if it looks old, I normally change them every couple of years.

Hi

Glow plugs are new fitted in Nov (NGK)

bus bar needs to be perfect also make sure the power lead is on no 2 or 3.

Would be worth checking the voltage on the bus bar as well.

How do you check voltage on this ?

No smoke if you rev up engine at any other time

Update

Went out and checked the leak off pipes absolutely rotten ! Cracked and perished I moved one and could hear a hiss of air escaping !

Is is simply pull/cut old one off and replace each one individually ?

That stuff fron gsf should be fine, I usually buy from my local hydraulic hose shop.

Its supplied in lengths and its just a case of pulling the old stuff off and trimming the new to length and pushing on. Place a rag under the one you are doing when removing as you will spill a little diesel.

job done in 10 minutes was very smoky on start up but I guess this was due to not being started for a few days and because all the pipes had been changed. ( didn't start it up before changing) Will start it up in the morning and see if its still smoky...fingers crossed its solved it !

The videos not working this end however, if its just the one puff that clears within a few seconds and it starts on all 4 with no hesitation, then I would be happy that you have no problems.

If its just a minor/small puff then dont lose sleep. probably just one of your nozzles dripping overnight or when you dont use it for a length of time.............
