Interior refit

Post by ticket2ride »

As the bodywork on my van needs work Ive decided to take the opportunity to update some of the interior. It is a Holdsworth Villa. Most of the carpet will be replaced. I will re-cover the foam (probably get new foam as well). Will make some of the rear door cards. The bed frame, cupboards and cab trim will stay. I might change to trumatic heater.

Would be good to get some tips along the way and any dos and dont's before I start.

First job is I need to extend the hi-top sleeping area with a slide out platform of some description. I want something like this (extendable bed):

It currently looks like this (not extendable):

Any tips?

Simon.

Need to make a new one of these.

The ones sold on eBay split this in two parts so need to figure out the angle. Bought some hardboard from the diy shed. I know people recommend ply but I only have a jigsaw and thought hardboard would be easier to cut.

A coping saw will easily cut plywood or hardboard great for going round the tight curves and corners.

Had a look at Titus' excellent thread on door cards and he uses yatch varnish. Can you use any exterior clear varnish?

You need to seal it as it will soak up the water from condensation. I did mine with fiberglass resin.

Is resin better than varnish then?

It should be more flexible.
Varnish cracks when you bend it.

I have a Holdsworth Villa Poptop and just replaced all al my door cards. I used Oil Tempered (Masonite) hardboard. I have also just recovered all my seats myself. They have come out quite well but It is a job I would not be attempting again :)

Here's a few pics of the cards and seats. The Panels were covered in the same brown vinyl that I used for the seat wings. I used a green upholstery material which I quilted with horizontal strips for the centres of the seats. I only have a domestic sewing machine so doing the seats was a real struggle for me.

I like the rice cereal design  Good effort, they look very neat. I bodged the cutting. Hoping the carpet with hide it.
