1.6TD Injector pipe sprung a leak

Post by nordberg »

Hi there,
Had a great 4 nights away in the van and just gotten back from a 5th day taking my mum out to a local garden canter as a belated mothers day outing to find a big pool of diesel under the van. On closer inspection I have found that one of the injector lines has a pin hole in it creating a very messy engine bay :(

So my questions are, where do i get a set of these pipes from at the best price, are they easy to fit and do I need a special tool to screw the connectors in as it looks like a socket / spanner would be awkward?

PS. Found these on Brickwerks site ( http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php/t ... t3-jx.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; )

As always, any help much appreciated. :(

^WHS - 17mm.

If you're having problems getting access, VW had a special spanner made (by Hazet) that can get onto these pipes - the tool number is 3035. Otherwise you could try making something up by slotting through a cheap 17mm ring spanner with a grinder to make a gap wide enough to get the injector pipes through.

Probably easier to just undo the others to provide access, as long as you fit them in the right order it's pretty straight forward

that must have felt wrong as you were doing it up? they aren't soft metal.. When you say collar, do you mean one of the nuts on the end of the pipe?

even if you have cross threaded it, it can still be possible to put it on straight. Can take a bit of faffing, but you should be able to get it back on square

Lloydy,
To be fair I am usually very careful with threads. That's why I am so miffed that it's not right. I backed it off, then tightened it up with my fingers. I think it must have thought it had wound down the thread to the point it needed a spanner, when in reality it had just bit the thread at the wrong angle. Really annoyed with myself

You've certainly had more than your fair share of problems with that van Andy...master cylinders, punctures, blower motors, exhaust systems, that I can remember, all in the last few months. Now the metal fuel pipes  I should hope that your luck will change soon and its not putting you off.

Fractured fuel lines is a pretty common accurance on these and down to the high levels of vibration circa 1980's engine technology. You might need a thread file on the injector before fitting the second new pipe...

And you should be able to get some money back selling the individual pipes that aren't knackered :ok

Martin,
I've not been put off by things so far fortunately. I am loving the van but my obsession with trying to get it in tip top condition for the summer has lead me to spend a little more that i could get away with. Yeah, the clutch cylinder, pipe and blower motor I am putting down to being used more than it probably has been since it was imported into the UK. The Eiebach suspension springs were a luxury, but the dampers needed doing and that has transformed the handling. the Stainless exhaust.....well, that just had to be done  .

Thanks for the advice on the thread. Will bear this in mind :D

Lloydy,
I think I would have jumped at the opportunity of a single pipe to fix my issue if somebody had offered one up, so with a little luck I may be able to help somebody else out and reclaim a bit of the £100 cash it's cost me to buy two sets
