In the yellow engine bay, the amplifier is fastened to what looks like an aluminium extrusion, is this to dissipate heat?

I want to paint parts of the engine bay, does the amplifier need to be earthed to the body or can I just paint the holes and then refit it? Thanks.

It is earthed via it's wiring so that shouldn't be an issue.

So, does that mean it's ok to zip tie it slightly out of the way whilst I apply a couple of coats over the next two days? Still want to use the van but it would be good to get it painted now the weather is a bit warmer. Thanks.

Reason for painting the holes.....going to be drilling them out to accept stainless rivnuts because I have an unnatural loathing of self tappers.

Not sure about that because the heat sink would not be firmly clamped to the back of the ignition module. Might be ok, but might not..... I know, use some nuts and bolts to temporarily hold the heat-sink on. In the world of electronics, it is normal to use a heat transfer paste to help conduct heat to the heatsink. Summat like = THIS or THIS

Scrap that, I know see that you're referring to my temporary tying of them while the paint dries. I'll go along with bolting the two together for a couple of days whilst the paint dries, I'm only using the van for the school run at the moment so it shouldn't get that warm I hope. You have made me think of another cause for concern - the heads of the rivnuts sit proud of the bodywork, resulting in the heat sink not being flat against the body when reassembled - a problem?
