A set of bizarre things have occurred!
So, trip to Aidans and in the morning wouldn't start (Etdi). Jumped it off the leisure battery and up and running. Then noticed the volt meter fluctuating and then shot over 14v! Switched on everything electrical and brought the volts below 14v.
So, checked battery terminals, earths etc nothing apparent, disconnected the leisure side didn't make a jot of difference. So erring on the alternator but before this was attended to 30 mile trip out, ignition off and engine running on, turned the lights off engine switches off.
Quick consultation and change the alternator.
You would think this solved it but... now more bizarre. main beam blue light shines on dip, dashboard dimmer makes the dash lights flash as the same pulsation of the oil and water light flashing, volt meter fluctuating and goes over 14v. The heater was put on and has now failed in the full blow mode.
Changed the alternator, light switch, pulled the fuse on the heater blower.
Oh and think we have been running really cool but today water temp showed 1/2 way - never does this.
Just putting it out there for suggestions.

Does the main beam warning light come on with sides as well? Lack of earth to instruments means that 12v on panel lights finds earth through the main beam warning light and the headlight bulb. It does all sound like an earth problem.

Heck, maybe you're using the wrong manual for repairs

Sorted, after stripping everything out!
One little earth tucked away in the most difficult position.
Thanks for the suggestions

Re: Excessive charging, flashing lights and engine running on
Just to piggy back on this my DJ engined Westy (87) is exhibiting strange behaviour dash wise. I have cleaned the multiple carefully using emery paper, but still have constant blinking oil pressure , occasional buzzer(pressure has been measured /sensors changed all ok), water level/warning light on constantly. Also when I was messing about the other day and swtichd all lights and heater on whilst ticking over, the engine stalled. Could it be alternator or earth. If so which earths should I check first? Thanks in advance Chris
