HELP! Replacing Alternator on T25 diesel 1983

Hi im trying to replace the alternator in my van and i cant get the new one in the bracket, i get feeling that the metal bushing it ment to slide out of the bracket but its not moving hence why i cant get the new one In. Any ideas anybody?

The metal insert does more, it just needs a good tap with a hammer. This bush closes up the gap once the bolt is inserted and tightened.
Just be a bit more 'forceful' shall we say...
