Ran it from cold (in the shed) this morning for five minutes. Choke seems to work fine. Revs seemed to remain HIGH and constant from start to turn off (5 minutes). Choke flap went from 3mm to fully open in 4 mins. Didn't take it for a drive. Cancelled the DOE (MOT) for tomorrow.

Took a 6 minute video which 'should' appear here.

I'm going to take a right turn. Currently cleaning the orig carb that only had an intermittent problem with not idling. Will put that back in and see what happens.

I think I have it fixed:-). Just took a spin and it's running great.

Bit the bullet, pulled the original carb apart, lots of gasket cleaner, full ultrasonic clean, replaced a suspect hose plus all the main gaskets and bobs your uncle.

It's ticking over lovely and driving better than I can ever remember. Hopefully this fixes the original intermittent issue (i.e. needing to rev the "pooh" out of it to keep it going ever so often, which appeared every so often like an on/off switch and went away the same).

I'm positive :D .

100% hanks for all the help above especially kevtherev.
