Where has this spring come from on my rear drum!! (& pic!)

Big lumps of metals and spanners. Including servicing and fluids.

I'm upgrading/overhaulin my brake system at the mo.

I've taken my n/s drum off and found a spring (red arrow in pic) wedged against the shoe! I'm assuming its similar to the one still attached (blue arrow) and has come from the hole marked by the yellow arrow. Can anyone confirm this.??

Its been there a while cos its been ground down through braking.

Correct. GSF do fitting kits which include all of these new. However, if you need to get everything put back and can't wait for one, you can use a washer and 6mm nut bolt. You'll need to test to find correct length required. Put the bolt through backing plate, through shoe, spring, original rusted washer, new washer on top, and secure with locking nut. Before anyone says anything, it worked fine for me - for almost ten years.

Best with fitting kit but if needs must....

Just work round it. The only time you take rear hub off is if rear wheel bearings are shot or the driveshaft bolts sheared off on the back and only way you can get to it is to knock halfshaft through. Its a squeeze replacing brakes but dooable. Careful that during fitting, shoes don't make heavy contact with brake cylinder rubbers - easily damaged.

It is likely that the retaining washer has just rotted out and the pin that comes through the backplate just fell out as a consequence.
These shoes retaining mechanisms come in three parts: the pin/spring & retaining hat washer. The slot in the washer is a bayonet fitting, as in, pushes and turns through 90 degrees.
