Fuel Tank replacement and gearbox question

Hi All,

My '81 Aircooled fuel tank is filling my filters with rust so I'm going to bite the bullet and replace the bugger along with as many related parts as possible, but...I cannot find a replacement main fuel neck to replace the old metal one, or a complete kit to replace the tank along with all parts (gaskets, breather pipe etc.) as there used to be from JK a few years ago. Can anyone point me in the right direction or shall I just get the current metal one re-finished/plated.

Also I've got an AAP Gearbox fitted and I seem to remember someone mentioning that corrosion can be halted/slowed of the box by changing where the earth-strap mounts on the Transporter, sorry for being vague :oops:

You could fit a later tank/filler neck combination...all the breathers/grommets are re-usable if found to be in good condition (they usually are) Brickwerks will supply the correct tank/main grommet, put up a wanted for the plastic filler neck.
It is correct what they say about gearbox corrosion....going from one of the starter motor mounting points to the nearby chassis leg tends to be a popular alternative position for the main earth...make sure you use a flexible multi stranded earth cable/braided cable to cope with engine movement.

Thanks Martin I knew I read something about the earth-strap. Good point about the plastic neck I think the search begins...

I guess it all depends on the condition of your metal filler neck and whether you think it is contributing to the rust ending up in the tank.
I'm not sure whether many remove the earth strap from the gearbox tail but the reaction that is talked about is definitely responsible for the corrosion that is often found on this part of the casing.
