Dreaded black paint gone...

Post by sternal »

Have taken the plunge and the van is being resprayed..as I was repeatedly told on here its hiding rust...fraid not though  no major rust or seem rash(just a tad) just awful black paint...
White is where the yellow has been rubbed off.
Seems the German owner before me did me a favour by painting it black and saving the paint...

More pics to come tomorrow when I go back for a check.

Body work looks in good order, ours was also painted black though not as high up as yours, took some scraping off was like a bitumin based stuff but had done its job over the years. Depends when its put on really if over good bodywork will preserve but over bad will hasten the rusting process.

Are you having the rusty metal cut out and replaced or simply having it painted over?
You promised more pics of progress. We like our semi naked camper pics!

Are you having the rusty metal cut

Nothing needed cutting out as the black paint had preserved the underneath...

1)What did your guy use on the rusty metal before painting? Useful to share.

2) Difficult to see, but it looks as if the windows, doors and fixtures were not removed to do a complete resto job. Is that right?

3) Once the job is finished it would be good to share the current cost of this partial resto with members, particularly for those in the expensive South East. They can then compare this with the cost of a complete resto, cos the preparation, replacing rusty metal etc affects the cost of the job.

Looks good so far!

correct as I only had the bottom half sprayed and its been blended in.

the minimal rust was rubbed of, etch primer and Zinc (if I was listening correctly)

I like that shade of yellow. If I had not decided to have mine re-sprayed in it's original colour of ivory that's what I would have gone for!

Its the original colour which was a non standard VW colour as it started life as a Deutsche Post van !

As there wasn't a paint code on the van the kind people as VW Germany sent me the code which is RAL 1032, Ginstergelb (polite email works wonders )

Will post some close up pictures over the next few days.
