Sounds normal for London. Better to avoid the VAT though. Keeps the cost down. Do you pay it?

Definitely 'Do It Yourself' Job then!
Honestly, in the grand scheme of things, not that difficult a job. On a mechanical skills chart of 1 - 10 I reckon I would give it a 3/4.

as much as I don't like paying it asking not to pay it is an offense...

Mechancically - not difficult as said....but they are bloody heavy when you are trying to support it and bolt it in...someone to hold it in position is useful.
