JX failed MOT on high emissions??

Post by Holydiver »

the van just fail the MOT on emissions (JX diesel) does anyone have any idea’s on over coming this? Can’t moan as it’s the first failure in 5 years!

Going to Halfords lunch time to get some red-X to run through it, plus a few trips up and down the motorway as it’s only done short journeys recently??

First thing to check is the air filter is clean and the snorkel pipework is clear, I have seen the pioework disintigrate internally and partially block itself.
Next up is a new fuel filter and that there are no air bubbles in the fuel lines.
After those its timing and compression checks.

1. Been running a K&N filter for a couple of years, is it worth fitting a standard element just for MOT retest??
2. didn't change it last year as only did 3K on it, as I have a new one in the shed I will fit it anyway
3. I did the cam belt in April and the timing was correct at that point?

Going to drive it to work this week via the motorway and retest Friday, guess if it fails then I'll need to look deeper!!

Give the k&n a good clean and go from there.
If it stands about alot then there is a good chance that there could be water in the fuel tank from condensation which would collect in the filter so worth changing that.
Is your fuel filter the one with the plastic valve in the top? If so it could be worth changing as that can cause air to enter the pump which will play havoc with the advance curve and put the emissions out.

Fill it up with premium diesel, and take it for a real good long thrash immediately before the test.

You want to get the oil really hot to get rid of volatiles that go into the crankcase breather. Or change the oil, that lowered the emissions on my DG to pass the MOT.

Pleased for you.

My Vol-vo 850 diesel scores 6 or more (!) on smoke if I don't thrash it first, 1.75 if I do.

It has done 320K miles though.
