Hello all, I have been searching for an engine to replace the 1.6td I'm my pickup which has seen better days....
What problems will I get fitting the ABF 16v engine?
I have read that when they are cranked over the 16v can have oil starvation issues in the head..
Bear in mind this vehicle will be a fun thing (being a pickup) and that fuel consumption isn't an issue..... I will be using the diesel box so am also concerned that it will be raving it's nuts off at 60 mph in top
I may be the AGG engine will be the second choice
Thanks all

I'm not an expert on the 16v but I suspect it will HAVE to be mounted upright, is it the one that uses a motronic system (braided fuel lines to injectors)? If so I dont know how the delivery valve would like being canted over
Played with a few ABFs in golfs and I personally think its the best n/a engine VW have ever made.
Dont worry about the gearing these engines will pull from tickover to 6.5k happily.
Try to find one from a seat up to about 1995 with the pre eobd vw 2+2 diagnostic socket as these have no immobiliser.
Im not sure on the best way to mount it as laying it over would make bolting in easier but would make it harder to get decent lenghth primary pipes on the manifold.
Agreed on fitting it upright, then you can sell on all your old TD bits which will pay for most of it. Don't be afraid of the later immobiliser ECU, wiring is still very simple plus an extra level of security. there's a guy called Rubjonny on clubgti forum who does a great wiring guide and is immensely helpful.
Have there not been a few comments from several that the torque curve from the 8v is better suited to our vans as it kicks in earlier than from the 16v. Would like to learn more about this if anyone has any direct experience/knowledge.

But 16v make more torque (evidenced by higher peak bhp) than any 8v can hope to... and T3 are all very low geared as things go.
I dont have the data infront of me, but iirc all the 2.0 make more Nm than any DG or DJ because the inlines have more stroke than the std wbx, and the inlet manifolds have very long runners which boost torque too. The 1.8 aren't too shabby either.
I think that most of the comments about 16v's lacking low down torque are from peoples experiences with the 1.8 kr's and assume the abf to be the same.
I can only comment on my experience driving 8 and 16v golfs, but I would say that that the 16v pulls better throughout the entire rev range.
