The haynes wiring diagram tells you where the earth points are for every thing on the van

The new voltage regulator has now been fitted, there were 2 pins which were really worn down compared to the new ones, I'm getting 13.7 volts at the battery with the engine running.

After cleaning all of the earths the temp gauge seems to be working, it never gets to half way. But the fuel gauge still doesn't work, has anyone fitted an independent fuel gauge?

Takes ages to get half way in this weather if it was just idling and the occasional rev.

Did you test to see if it was the gauge or the sender in the tank?

Progress that's good. The new regulator pack is already doing the job properly and costs peanuts, compared with a new alternator. Nearly there now! :ok

I have no idea how to test either the gauge or the sender, I don't really know how the mechanism works. Is it a resistant check or a voltage check?

Pin 7 on the dash multiplug Lilac + Blk (Fuel Gauge sender)

Also worth just removing and reconnecting the dash multiplug first could just be a bad connection there


If you ground pin 7 on the dash multiplug Lilac + Blk (Fuel Gauge sender) you will expect to see the guage go to full ( obviously it needs to be plugged in and the ignition on) if it does not then suspect the guage , if it does then its the sender or its wiring.

You can probaly get to this multiplug without removing the dash by looking up under the dash on the RHS, you can just poke a thin wire into pin 7 and then short to earth.

Also found this nugget using the search.
I had a thought that the circuit board might be the issue so I bypassed it and attached the wires directly from the multiplug and to the fuel gauge - this appears to now work!

I followed the purple/black wire back to a junction box where I was able to fit a wire and earth it, nothing happened unfortunately. If I were to bypass the board, how would I connect onto the gauge, which connection do I need to hook the purple/black up to? I would like to give this a go to prove it's not the fuel gauge
