Ej20 wiring issues

Post by JimmyT25 »

Hi

I bought an ej20 engine and converted loom (along with key transponder and ecu) and I have now installed all of the conversion bits from RJES into the van and all has gone well.

I am now in the process of Sorting the wiring out, and am having some problems, the first one is that the wiring in the van originally is in a bit of a state as at some point in its life someone has butchered the original wiring to add an alarm :/
The second issue is that after I bought the engine, loom, ecu and transponder I found out that the ecu, loom and key transponder came from an older car than the engine (engine is 2002 52 plate and loom etc is 2000 y reg)

Can anyone help me get this sorted as I'm not an auto electrician and it's driving me crazy!

I'm in Exeter in Devon but am in the process of moving house so I need to sort something asap!

Many thanks

James

Are you after technical advice or do you want someone to come and sort it for you ?

It's not clear from your post, have you verified the 2000 electrics are incompatible with the 2002 engine, or are you just concerned they might be ?

Chap, best thing to do is buy ^one of his^ looms and fit it.

If wiring worries you , you could chase forever looking for issues/faults/problems/solutions. Loads of threads on forums about subaru wiring misery.

Have installed two of Andys looms and they are an absolutely outstanding piece of craftmanship/art, plug n play fit. :ok

I completely understand as I already have one, the issue I have is that the ' 'original' wiring in the van has been abused in the past and has been completely butchered to add things over the years, I'm trying to remove sections that I don't need and isolate and identify what is remaining and connect the last few remaining wires.
The loom I have is all labelled and the front extension harness is all sorted too, I'm just struggling with a few remaining bits.

front end or rear end loom?

Rear end is plug and play just about from the distribution box , front end is slightly more involved but unless someone has gone bonkers with a hedge trimmer then only ignition side and possibly indicators should have been touched.

Pics/description of what the oe wiring issues are chap :ok

Not one of mine (unless your not a Jim IRL), perhaps its an RJES job ?

Are you short of a wiring diagram, or what ??? (Plenty of diagrams on my website..)

I'm not sure if this shows it very well but that's the extent of the problem.

Wiring from modified loom to alternator, starter, coolant level, fuel pump and to the engine itself are all fine but the issue I'm having is with the wiring from the van to the modified loom, if that makes sense.

If I were you I'd start by getting the correct factory wiring diagram for your vehicle (year/engine), then identify any non-standard wiring and remove it, then rebuild/repair the wiring to how it should be. You may need to acquire suitable original-colour wiring and connectors to do that, ideally these could be obtained from cannibalising old spare harnesses. You may have to compromise on the connectors as obtaining the original terminals can be tricky. You could use generic multipin connectors using 1/4" spade connectors. Companies like VWP and Polevolt sell that sort of thing.
