MTdi gearbox gearing

Post by ZsZ »

Hi all!
Been here for a while but I never asked anything, so here is my first one :)

I have a 1Z with a pump from a Fiat Croma slightly modified to reach higher rpms, but without intercooler.
I had an AAP gearbox with 0.78 5th gears from a DX that perished a few months ago. (chipped teeth on the 5th)

Now as I am planning the rebuild, cannot decide between new gear ratios. 0.70 or 0.74? Which is better for my engine?
And which manufacturer? Weddle industries? Albins Off Road? Motorsport Notter?

What are your experiences? What do you recommend? Any other advice? Thanks!

5spd custom box 4.57 diff + 0.74 5th

.70 is a big gap from 4th, so I'd go 0.73 or 0.75, depends on tyre size, weight and usage
Weddle and Albins are the same thing, Albins make gears for Weddle, Albins don't sell except to Australian market,
I've not used any of the european sourced HD gearsets so can't advise on them, but the Weddle gears have the best design with floating dog cone which means if it gets damaged in future can be replaced without replacing the other 2/3 of the gearset
I will be ordering from Weddle next week if you want one tacking on to the order - drop me an email

Ok! Thanx Aidan!

I am at the planning stage as I did not open the gearbox yet, so not know what else needed to change. I'll write to you for the details.

What else do you recommend to check/change while the case is open? Synchro ring for sure, but needle bearings?

update: it is a tintop multivan in "daily" use and long roadtrips (10T km Norway trip this summer)
