Sooty deposits on bumper (exhaust side)

1.6TD engine, recently leaving what looks like sooty diesel deposits on the bumper. Engine has also become smoky on start up from cold more recently which may or may not be connected. Smoke clears quickly and engine runs very well, no obvious signs of issues (water in oil etc). I'd appreciate any ideas of causes!?
