newbie needs help!

Post by bond1407 »

hi all new to the forum and new to my T25, bit of background I manage a vag breakers yard and I got offered a 2.0 Aircooled camper. obviously I couldn't refuse! picked it up and got it transported back to the yard. it did run but ran rough with some backfiring and no power at all. knowing absolutely nothing about the old stuff ie carbs etc (I'm only late 20's) I gave it my on site engine builder to have a look at. well 3 hours later it was still no better so it was parked back up. I've now brought it home to finally get stuck into and hopefully get it back to its former glory. first things first I need to know that all the pipes are going where they should be as ive got a feeling my guy swapped stuff round, I've re arranged it all to where I think they should be but could do with someone confirming this is what it should look like. it looks to have had a new dizzy cap and coil at some point so that's a start. you'll have to bear with me I am mechanically competent but not with one of these but I'm eager to learn

Before you get too far into it, do a proper compression test or you could be chasing your own tail. They're as little as a tenner some places and with an old engine you need to establish its condition before you dig in.

Is good advice, first things first.
I have to say the distributor looks wrong though.

look for posts by sarran1955 on here...if you use the search button and search by author. He has many video and instructions, and can get the deadest Aircooled running again.

Get the firing order right (1 4 3 2)....where 1 is the drivers side on RHD nearest the driver, 2 is in front of 1, 3 is passenger side nearest passenger and 4 is in front of 3!!

it looks like the leads cross in the picture, so think that may be ok?

also - in your picutre on the left hand side of the engine bay, mounted to the metal you have the coil, the idle stabiliation unit (ISU) and the Ignition control unit (ICU). You can bypass the ISU by unplugging the leads and connecting them directly to each other (the ISUs have been known to fail)
