New to the VW T25 world.

Post by Paulf1969 »

Evening
I'm new to the club and new to the VW T25 world. I think I'm having a mid life crisis. I also must apologise in advance, as I fear I'll become very annoying.
I have bought a G reg panel van fitted with a AAZ TD engine mated to a dog leg 5 speed. It's had a few bits done including lights, grills and lower panel kit. The body is solid but has taken time to get in some sort of shape ready to paint, and this is not concerning me at all.
The queries I have are more engine, gearbox and running gear.
The engine appears to be very strong. Apart from the crank pulley is there anything else I should be concerned with?
The gearbox is very sloppy. It hits the dash when trying to engage gears. Are there any 5 speed upgrades that will be more precise and give me the ranges I want. I want to pull up hills and be able to cruise at 65/70. Also I've seen a Porsche boxster selector fitted to a T25, could I do this to mine?
It is lowered slightly and has 17" alloys fitted, larger tyres to the rear I presume to give better top end. With the alloys giving me the room, are there upgrades/swaps/conversions from other VW's brakes that will fit? Does anyone know about rear disc upgrades?
I'm looking to put a few thousand miles on it this year to iron out any bits as next Jan/Feb I plan to take it around Europe for 60 days. It's going to be my daily driver.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!

Hi Paul,

welcome to club 80-90!

Have you been able to work out what gearbox code yours is? If it originally came from a diesel T25 the gearing will be lower than one the came from a petrol T25, so that would be the first thing i'd check out.

Next - what size tyres are on your 17 inch wheels? If they are very low profile the diameter may actually be smaller than standard, so that wouldn't help.

It should be possible to overhaul your gear selector and linkage to give it less throw/ play and there's a "short shifter" kit available.

Aidan Talbot is the man to speak to about T25 gearbox rebuilds and re-gearing: http://www.aidantalbot.com/live/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Other than that, for non-standard stuff I don't have much knowledge, personally I try to keep it as "factory" as possible, but some people fit a "flipped" audi/ passat gearbox to get different ranges, but usually on a Tdi conversion: http://www.ultimate-engineering.co.uk/gearbox.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Hope that helps :)

I've just joined and I'm trying to fathom the website. I hope I'm posting in the right place.
I'm trying to purchase an awning and a roof top wooden box for an 88 T25 Transporter called "Humphrey".
Can anyone advise? I know Just Campers do a nice retro drive away but it's not very tall. Any suggestions would be most welcome.
Thanks in advance...Barra.
