Coolant Leak from Header Hose to Carb?

Post by 300CE »

Hi All,

I noticed a little patch of coolant under the van and upon investigation have found a little leak from the coolant hose that connects to the carb from the header tank - the water was running from between the hose and the carb onto the manifold, down onto the right had side of the block and then running down the back of the engine. It's only a minimal amount as i've never had to top up my coolant levels and only seems to happen when the van is cooling down.

I tightened up the existing hose, but after a long run doesn't seem to have made any difference - I do, however, have a Genuine VW hose to replace, but also wondered whether there is a small gasket that needs to be replaced on the carb housing? I've attached a couple of pictures so you can see. Any help or advice much appreciated as always:

This pic just shows the leak:

This pic indicates where i think there maybe a gasket:

Those jubilees look very tight
often you can overtighten jubilees and damage the pipe.
you can also get corrosion on the aluminium pipe which stops it sealing properly.
is there enough spare pipe to cut the end off and start again?

sorry no idea about carb as it's a webber

Cheers For the reply itchy - I've got a bit of slack on the hose so will cut it down and re-tighten with a new clip - it will also give me the option to check what shape the aluminium pipe is in. :ok

I'll fire off a quick email to a couple of companies that deal with the weber for a bit of advice - I'll then update with any news.

:ok

I had similar problem and the pipe had a slit in it caused by a too tight jubilee clip. Cut an inch off the pipe and all ok now .

Cheers all - Just seen those curved ones on Brickwerks so am going to purchase a few and change them where needed - looks like the ones that are currently on there are gradually eating into the hose.

Need to get the right range clip also, although they have been overtightened those look like they were too big in the first place, too much excess past the screw.
