windage tray sump gasket
I've got the sump off my engine as it was leaking. I've got the windage tray gasket combination and as I'm reading threads on the forum its advising me to extend the holes and its leaving me a bit confused what holes am i to extend and how? Also its advising longer bolts where is the best place to source these Any help is appreciated

Re: windage tray sump gasket
I've tried both the ordinary rubber gasket and the windage tray type, and I've also tried all sorts of modifications to the holes in the windage tray. The best oil pressure with the smallest amount of surge under braking and cornering was obtained using the ordinary rubber gasket. I really couldn't measure any advantage from using the windage tray, or from modifying it. I can only guess why this might be. Perhaps it just dosn't work at it should at that crazy angle.
I wish it did work. That would have saved me a load of work!

1.9D (AEF) pop-top. Aaaaahhhhh........that's better.

Re: windage tray sump gasket
It is the two holes in the bell housing that need elongating to cater for the increased thickness of the rubber gasket on the tray. See the definitive 1Y thread for my solution to minimize oil surging on sharp braking and/or sharp turns. The sump to block bolts need to be slightly longer with the thicker gasket (Just use the ones from the donor engine instead of the CS/JX ones.)

Re: windage tray sump gasket
Are you sure that the ones that you have are too short? Have you actually checked to see how much protrudes at present with the rubber gasket? I can't remember the size - maybe BigHerb will be along with the info. (He usually has this type of info to hand)
I would have thought that VW have them in stock.
