DJ oil cooler on DG

I would need the longer threaded tube for the sandwich cooler, anybody seen them?
Also plumbing is from water pump (most come with the extra connection) to the thermostat housing but confused where on the thermo housing?

Paul - the 2.1 that I'm rebuilding has this longer tube, and I won't be using it since I've bought a Mocal thermostatic sandwich plate that comes with its own spindle. If you PM me your address it's yours, once I get the crank case back from the machine shop. I might have some of the pipework too, but since I've chucked out the old thermostat housing off this engine I can't help with your second question.

I have both of those from my 2.1, so you're welcome to them. They're quite rusted on the outside, but they look as though they might be water tight! I'll give them a blast in the grit blaster at work so it'll be easier to see what condition they're in.

Do you want the standard 1.9 oil filter tube in return? can easily take one off the spare engine.

I see now the DJ thermostst housing has an extra pipe but I can't see any reason why I can't just T this into the heater return.

Paul, you've got LPG, how about simply "daisy chaining" it onto the coolant feed pipe to the LPG vaporiser?

Yeh maybe, have to see what the acess is like near the fan belt
That rubber pipe that joins to bottle and carb from there is 80 odd quid so don't really want to be stressing it or cutting it.

Looking at the 2.1 thermostat housing the oil cooler return is between open and closed thermostat valve positions so circulates cold and hot in the same way (bypassing the rad when hot) to presumably get better flow.

So cutting into the heater return on the large metal pipe with a t piece gives virtually the same connection but the thermostat housing probably has a smaller hole as a restrictor so that needs thinking about.

Anybody got a 2.1 thermostat housing kicking about you could check the hole diameter please?

Another solution occured to me when looking at my 1.9 late thermo housing and there is a boss where the tube is on a 2.1, I think it's possible to drill and tap M10x1 and fit a spare water pump metal tube there as the plastic is very thick.

You have to wonder how much flow is lost through the rad becuase of the pressure loss by this bypass and how much extra heat is pumped back into the engine as it bypasses the rad, perhaps ths reason for metal pipes to help cool.

I now have an oil temp guage and I can see that driving around in April at lower speeds the temperature get up to 85-95 deg C, after a long run at 50-65mph it can go above to 100 ( temp guage accuracy maybe 5 degrees)

So anybody know what typical water coolant tempertures are on a fast run?

My fan never cut in on the motorway run so I assume considerably less than the oil and the point of the DJ oil cooler? ( other than warming oil in winter)

I have exactly the same tacho and mines 2.5bar at 3000rpm.

what temperature is your oil when 2.5 bar at 3000rpm?

Bentley says 2 bar min at 80 degC 2000 rpm, so mine is a bit low but what is typical at 95 or 100 degC? Who knows?

No idea what the temp is, it always seems to be about the same though.

I too have an early system and fitted the oil cooler so perhaps it makes a bit of difference, I always use 20/50 as well.

I'm going to have to get a temp one now as well!

Big thanks to CJH for donating his DJ oil cooler coolant pipes and the 3/4 UNF pipe/ nut from his DJ ( he is fitting a big boy's cooler not a girly oil warmer like this one ) 50 quid to buy this lot new and he even posted it FOC

Removing the DG pipe, only 15mm sticking out and it's very tight , two 3/4 UNF half nuts turned down to 7mm and tightened together with a 28mm spanner (ground down to 7mm thick), out it comes. The engine in the van has less access but doable. Spanner and nuts £7 off ebay.
