Is the JX intermediate pulley offset?

Post by windy »

Just changed the oil seal on the intermediate shaft & now I've put it back together I noticed the timing belt runs against the edge lip of the intermediate pulley. Its obviously been doing this some time as the belt is showing signs of it rubbing on that side. Unfortunately I just put the pulley back on the same way it came off & didn't notice the alignment issue until the belt was back on & tensioned. Could the pulley be on back to front, ie is it offset at all? I looked in the Bentley manual but no mention is made of it.

You must have an early engine/van,my pully doesn't have lips on it[92 van] is the timing belt running in the middle of the cam gear/pully?
I dont think, so I'm not[do I exist?]

The tracking of the belt is down to the angle the injection pump is mounted. Looking at the back of the ip there is a small bracket that attaches to the engine block and the ip you will see that the bolt holes are slotted. Moving the back of the pump toward the block to make the belt move towards the engine, and vise versa. Only adjust small amounts at a time and turn the engine over a good few times by hand to check tracking before start up.

The belt runs central on the timing, cam & crank pulley, but its against the edge of the intermediate pulley. I didn't know they made those pulleys without the lips. Mines an 87 syncro so the engine should be classed as "late" AFAIK, but thats not to say parts haven't been swapped in the past.
Heres a pic just taken;

well...you could try moving the injection pump cradle [the bolts are difficult to get at] a bit,or try the pulley on the other way round!!
Cable ties and three hands needed!
