The 5.75" ones that you linked to, will they do my inner ones on a SA grill?
Thanks for the work you have put into this, still not sure what to buy. I do have a relay upgrade kit; going to put a post with a fat cable from the battery to the lights that was previously mentioned. Should sort the wires at the back end first though I suppose!

I guess its a bit like the 'hidden' lucas fitting in so many round T25 light pods - not immediately obvious. There are other light units like that that have those lugs that just seem to be for the retaining spring though. Mystery deepens. Perhaps it was VW's attempt to please more countries. The Go Westy headlight upgrade is very much a lucas/MGB type setup.

You're right. Although the bulb can rotate in the headlamp hole, the gold ring only fits snugly onto the bulb when it's oriented correctly, so that indeed fixes the bulb correctly in the headlamp.

And following on from the other guess work critism about beam patterns the relative burner position has also been checked in the origional thread and it's identical.

So no problem fitting H4 to old style headlights IMO and there seem to be plenty about, anybody wanting new lamp units thats great also IMO as long as they don't dazzle.

What we have to remember is comments on here are opinion and not always fact.

I don't think so - the original Hella units for the SA grille have three mounting brackets fixed to the reflector, and those ebay units only seem to have the same locating lugs as the 7" ones, but no mounting brackets. It might be possible if you can find a frame that mounts to the adjuster screws, but it's not going to be a straight replacement.

Does anyone know what variations (if any) there were for the round headlight pods/fittings and if there were, what years these affected? Its not bulb fittings but light assembly fittings for the normal round units I need to know. A solution to the 'clips' issue may be in the offing.

Are you talking about this?
If so this is off a later H4 (was same on earlier Headlights I got but no guarantee they hadn't been swapped about)

Yes thats the baby. It looks the same as my 84/85 so perhaps the pod is consistent then. If so, thats actually good news all round. If anyone knows of another type, let me know :D

Many thanks for that.

Still keep looking at my defender bezel and my tr7/rover retaining kit (purchased during the great 7 inch headlight retaining debate ) and wondering how I'm going to make them work in the easiest way with my cheapo ecp lamp units

Ended up fitting old style T25 lamp units (from what2d) with H4 in the end ( left the shields in place) but not given up yet

The solution is being made/produced (not by me) but just wanted to be sure there wasn't some radical change of round light pod before we get too exited. Should know shortly.

Not overly familiar with them but I think they change colour and go a blue-ish colour when on to mimic modern lights?

Will a H4 fit OK in the original Hella lens?
