Upgrade it you will never get blistering performance from a 1.6.

Can you give us a clue as to your location?
Somebody could help with a recommendation if they are in your area.
Have you read the "alternative engines" information in the club wiki?

Great so what do you fancy fitting in place of the 1600D?

It depends how much power you want. You could go with a jx motor (t25 turbo diesel), or something like an aef motor from a polo (non turbo but 1.9 and more power than standard 1.6) they are also quite cheap. There are plenty of others aaz, 1z etc but cost more.
More power= more money, so it comes down to your budget.

Have done a couple of aef (1.9) conversions, there not mega powerful but a lot more torquey. They would benefit from a better ratio gearbox rather than the standard 1.6d gearbox, however it does do the job fine.

I'll recommend an AEF engine too. I've done it and it works well. They can be got from breakers for around £250. Or buy a Skoda Felicia 1.9D for £500 and break it to recoup the cost. Allow a couple of hundred for sundry bits and bobs as well. Plus fitting of course.
There's a complete guide to this conversion at
http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/forum/16cs- ... KW=#413096 " onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Make sure you read the first bit about exactly what bits to buy.
I've got a perfectly good low mileage 1.6CS here, but no-one has shown any interest in buying it! I'll get more by breaking it for bits I think.
1.9D (AEF) pop-top. Aaaaahhhhh........that's better.
