Thermostat - leaky...

Hello,

Have a leak on the bypass tube (big metal pipe) side of the thermostat housing, its only present after the van is warm and water pressure increases..drip drip drip....

Any suggestions on how to fix this ?

Would it be a new housing itself, or replace the green clip with a new one that can be tightened...

Depends on whether it's coming from the hose connection or the stat housing (sorry, that's a bit obvious isn't it).

Those clips, whilst a pain to get on and off, are usually pretty reliable once fitted as they have a firm and even grip around the hose.

That stat housing looks as if it has a bit of gasket showing. If so, then that ain't right because they are normally sealed with a rubber ring that is fitted around the outer circumference of the actual thermostat. Worth looking into (literally ) but watch those bolts on the housing, they have a habit of seizing into the metal sleeves in the plastic bit and then breaking when you try to shift them PlusGas (note = NOT WD40 !) is your friend, along with some care and luck If your actual stat is missing it's "O" ring or it's damaged, I am not sure whether you can get them separately, you might, but a whole new stat with it's "O" ring is not dear HERE

Been a long day, replaced the old rear JK suspension with KnR jobbies...

Thanks for the reply, I remember now why I had the gasket.

One of the four bolts snapped last time so I had to drill it out make do with a nut and bolt combo..its the front left one in the picture, and it leaked....so I guess it is time to get a new thermostat housing....

The green spring clip has plenty of tension in it and the pipe itself looks good....will order a new rubber seal as well and take it from there.

Brickwerks do a budget housing for 20 quid odd...bargin

I think you are doing the right thing by ordering a new housing. I think you will find that it isn't the hose that is leaking and something else on the housing (a crack or one of the metal inserts that have corroded and expanded splitting the plastic as they do).

Is it also worth buying the top as well and the hose, its only an additional 18.00 and for piece of mind its worth doing IMO.

May as well do a coolant change whilst Im at it...

just to be a pedant it's not a by-pass tube.
It's the main inlet for coolant cooled from the radiator or from the thermostat by pass circuit (when cold) to the water pump.

The top usually is reusable, however, make sure the tiny hole in the top isn't blocked like mine was..I ended up renewing mine after snapping a drill bit in it lol.
Euro Car Parts G12+ in 1litre containers neat is the best price and free delivery.

Hi,

There are two hoses I need to replace, they are currently braided hoses..one is from expansion tank to header tank and the other is from the top of the thermostat housing straight up into the bypass circuit # 27

Any ideas what spec this hose needs to be and the diameter ?
