changed gear linkages now 1st slips!

Post by plan38 »

Hello all,

newbie to the site, so wanted to say hello first off. Just bought my 1st t25 1.9 petrol from 1983 (had 2 t25s before, but never a petrol one!) He's in abit of a sorry state, lots of welding and body work to be done but I love these old vans and have just sold my t4 to fund the resto!

When I got "Burt" (he's bright yellow!) The gear linkage was so sloppy I couldn't tell if I was in gear or not! So I've changed the linkage at the gear stick end and the hooked link next to the gearbox. Changes gear lovely now but with my foot off the accelerator letting the van take itself down the lane it can make a small clunk and half slips out of 1st with no power, just revs. Doesnt seem to do this if using the accelerator or when driving/under load? Could I have not lined up the gear stick linkage properly? Read theres a gauge setting in the gearstick housing but can't find this dimension anywhere. Or is there a more serious underlying problem. As I've only just got the van I'm not sure if this was a problem already. :?:

Love "Bert" already but he's got to be on top form as he's my daily driver :D Any help hints or suggestions would be greatly appreciated :ok

Two things:

Make sure you bolted the mechanism at rear on to correct side of gearbox rib/flange
Set neutral on box, make sure the lever sits perfectly vertical and gearlever is also in neutral THEN tighten 13mm nut that holds rear mechanism on.

Take a look in the WIKI as there is masses of info on linkage

also , did you loosen the splined join at all? 4sp or 5sp ? if 5 then sounds like the splined connector wants shortening a touch, try 2-3mm
if 4sp then lengthen by same amount , thats after checking as cove says ,thta the bracket it on the correct side at g box end and also is not upside down , pickky ??
mm

Lol! Just finished the linkage and the connector at the gear box was definitely not vertical, so straightened it up and first gear seems to be stronger. But the dark has got the better of me and I'll have to test drive tomorrow now!

Thanks for the info - its been a big help in knowing where I've gone wrong :D
