Will that make a difference? Just get under and paint it on; leave it soak for a day and attack it the next?
I reckon tow it too the cliffs and cover the thing with paraffin. Its insured!

Re: Broken down with a bang!
Thanks for link Itchy. I saw those too but got distracted by the wiper fuse thread.
You just want all that crudded grease/grit off so you can at least work clean. The right way to do this job is to clean CV joints thoroughly (all in the WIKI) off the vehicle and repack with grease once clean. Also scrape off all the muck round and in flanges so its all clean. Its a bad enough job without working in crud. DO wear rubber gloves fella.
I detest doing CV joints and boots. Its messy and awkward so you have my sympathies - particularly in this weather.

I was just going to take one in with me!

I did see that in the Wiki, just forgot since I read it Saturday. I just re-read through that, i'll upgrade to spline bolts too I think, but I dont think I'll find those easily locally so I'll ebay them.

Re: Broken down with a bang!
Be VERY careful with bolts on ebay. If they're cheap, it'll be for a reason. Make absolutely sure they're high tensile. They're generally black.

Re: Broken down with a bang!
The best options I can see are:
- JK @ £1 a bolt... but thy dont state grading or anything
-http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-MK1-MK2-Go ... 259e1deb05These look good state the are 12:9, but arent black as I would of expected (and you suggested) but they are splined or
- http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-T1-T2-T3-B ... +Make%3AVW which are black and apparently high tensile, however not splined.
any suggestions?

Re: Broken down with a bang!
Both seem fine to me. The splined ones make it a LOT easier to do up outside ones simply because there are more positions to get the tool on. You can also get the required welly on them. Do a proper strip and clean of the joints though if you can warrant the time. A nice clean and fully greased axle is more pleasant to deal with, plus you'll prolong life of the bearings. I painted my axles when I did mine and they still look pretty good.

Re: Broken down with a bang!
Will only be the accumulated crud holding it there - honest. One short tap should free it.

Unfortunately, they only offer royal mail or UPS. I have questioned it, "Shipping… prices are linked directly from UPS now, and based on the individual item weights, so correct 95% of the time." It cost me £26 for two droplinks; & £26 for all my suspension (dampers, springs and bushes). It's a shame, I cant fault them otherwise.
Emailed brickwerks again; a helpful reply "its an issue with the webshop postage rates that for some reason calculates Guernsey as "International".
Its on the long list of "stuff for the webshop guys to sort"..."
They also said they will refund the difference in actual postage costs.
