oil leak from dipstick tube

Post by ermie571 »

Hi all,

nice puddle of oil under the van in the car park. :-(

closer inspection reveals a steady drip from the base of the oil filler tube...and rather alot of crud around it.

Have bought oil to top up and get home. Saturday's plans may have changed :-)

so....a good clean up and see what's what I guess.

If it is that, is tightening likely to work, or is some sort of gasket required?

as always, any help appreciated!

I had similar problem a while back. Tried tightening the 2 nuts and even replaced gasket ( Brickwerks ) but still got a drip of oil.
Took whole tube off and cleaned up with wire brush and found a dent in the tube and a tiny hole in the dent.
Looks like dent was caused by a spanner as access is very limited to one of the nuts.
A bit of chemical metal plugged the hole and lasted a year until I sourced a good used spare tube

I had a leak from my dipstick tube last year,
My alternator had been knocking (the two studs had sheared) and the vibration had fatigued the dipstick tube where it enters the engine casing.
I used a very small cork to temporarily stop the leak, then a new dipstick tube and rubber seal from Brickwerks.
10 mins to fit.

oil fillers are hens teeth, get it brazed if holed, dipstick more likely the o ring.

There is a gasket at base but getting to the nuts is a pain
http://www.brickwerks.co.uk/index.php/g ... -tube.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
some say a very thin spanner but I say you may have to remove stuff to get to it

As you say before removing get in there with paraffin and a paint brush or similar to give it a good clean then you may be able to see if the leakmis coming from gasket or a hole, or broken at plastic join.
