Best quality push rod seals

Hello.

You guys have been massively helpful in the first few months of my t25 owning tenure.

So I have a 1981 Aircooled 2.0cu and she drips oil from the push rods like a (insert something that drips a lot..tap?)

I have been to my local vdub nut and he tells me that it isn't worth doing unless it's with the best German seals (rubber things not sea mammal). He is waiting for some to come in but doesn't know when they'll be in. Where else can I get the good ones? How can I tell? I don't want to fit pap ones and have to it all again a few months down the line. Do a job, do it well!

One good thing with the 2.0 Aircooled, at least they're easy to change. This facility was lost on the WBX.

Is it super easy? I am a pretty competent mechanic. The guy in Bristol will do seals and tubes for £160 inc labour. What do you think? What's the best make of seals? I've emailed the gunzi people.

Well, pretty much yes. Rocker covers off, remove rocker assembly, lay out pushrods in order, pull old tubes out (on a WBX you can't without removing head) then refit.

Not the best weather to do it in, but a straightforward enough job I'd say. If you're competent, I don't think you'd find it too difficult. Always good to use decent seals but use what you can get if it comes to it. At least the leak will stop.

I still for the life of me, don't understand why VW dropped that concept. Can only presume the design team changed on the WBX.

seem to remember there is a large wire spring thingy that is need to hold them in and often missing, never done one myself.

leaks may be due to spring clip missing, have you checked if you have that part?

Okey dokey. It's hard because all companies say they're perfect etc. the side that pees out definately has a spring clip in it can't remember the other side. How long does Gunzi take? Should I do tubes at €7 each as well. Seems bleddy cheap. I'm guessing its one small, one large seal per tube?

So it's literally rocker clip off, rocker cover off, rocker out, rods out, tubes out. New Seals on new tubes and replace all. Sounds easy enough. I've read about nipping the seals how do I avoid?

Yes they'll be a spring clip. Two seals per tube (one of which is a large O-ring). Honestly its not hard. Just make sure pushrods seat correctly. Haynes describes it pretty well. Don't overtighten rocker nuts. If you don't have a torque wrench, pulling a short extension bar tight with two fingers on the bar will be about right pressure for rocker nuts.

If I ever need to do mine, I will try and get seals made of Viton, it's a higher temperature material. To install them, lightly smear with grease, I wouldn't use any sealing compound.

Brickwerkz do 'elring' push rod seals. Any good? I want to get it done ASAP really so don't want to wait for them to come frm europe.

Elring are original manufacture or Victor Reinz are OK. The outer seals are high temperature O rings and should be green or pink in colour the inners are standard O rings black in colour (Brickwerks have the wrong picture for the head seals I hope).

When you re fit the rocker assemblies be very careful you don't over tighten the two nuts that hold them to the head. From memory they are a fine thread and easily stripped, check the torque figures.
Replace the rocker gaskets at the same time as they are only a few quid each.
