Broken down with a bang!

Post by Smosh »

Hi all,

Van has just broken down with a bang. There has recently been a knocking noise which were noticeable when going on and off the throttle and changing gears. I assumed this was engine mounts and planned to investigate soon...
This morning I was half way to work i went to move off, and then with a bang the revs shot up and it didn't accelerate.
Van goes into gear fine but doesn't have any drive. Any suggestions?

Thanks! Josh.

Have a look to see how many drive shafts you have attached.... If one has come of ( loose bolts quite common ) you will have the same problem as you describe. Good luck !

Cripes! I read scare stories about these a couple of years ago on here and checked mine that weekend. Not the most expensive of things to repair if it turns out to be that - fingers crossed.

Okay, cool. Doesn't sound too bad. I'll have a read up later at what I'm looking for!

The diagnosis will be immediate once you're under the van.

Shaft on or shaft not on - simples.

Im pleased its not just me then! At least the knocking has now stopped. :run

So Im assuming the drive shaft will be hanging down, from glancing under at the side i couldnt see that it was. That said, it was wet and I was in a suit!

Not necessarily - if it's an outside one it will be just resting in the metalwork. Mine was when it went. Just give it a shake to check.

Why's that? Foes the near side not suffer more from camber and pot holes? I'm intrigued - as always.

outside left and right as opposed to gearbox ends - as they are difficult to get at they seem to tend towards not getting cleaned up/torqued up correctly

I see now, yes, trying to tighten them through the opening in the radius arm is tricky.

I had the same thing happen about 18mths ago. I was going up a steep hill, shifted down to second, next thing I knew there was a loud band and I started rolling backwards!

Give the driveshafts a shake by hand, if it moves about, then you' em found the problem. Mine was just the bolts, not too bad.

Hope you get it sorted soon! :ok
