Andy

Many thanks for the info. I will have a look for the base to suit the 18s, might just be as easy to go the route you have gone. I take it I will need special barbed tabs to

If you call a 1/4" uninsulated spade terminal 'special' I dunno, I think of them as very standard but they're getting a bit harder to find. Less folk seem to be DIY'ing I think so some things are getting more 'specialist' maybe. The 9mm ones definitely are a bit hard to find. Polevolt are OK for mail order but I'd like to think there are plenty of other suppliers out there. Wurth are very good but they are trade only. Durite are TBH a bit disappointing. It helps to have a selection of sizes for different wire thickness too, and a decent crimp tool.

Re. the 'special' spade terminals. I thought some of the terminals that pushed into a relay base had a 'tang' that holds the terminal into the base. These I thought were specific to the base manufacturer.

Depends on the particular base, until ~97 (in other words central electrics 1&2) relay bases (eg. the part nos I've quoted) used generic AMP/TE 'Faston' type spade terminals with latching barb. Later vehicles used different designs of relay holders, connectors etc. and more proprietary terminals started to be used. However they all have their AMP equivalent part numbers, and with a bit of research they are obtainable. VW didn't make their own, they mostly are made by AMP.
