missing wire for temp sender

Post by Atoomer23 »

Hello
I need help in locating the wire that should be on the temp sender around the thermostat area.
I never noticed until I changed my water pump that there is no wire on it.
But my gauge and light does work when pump was leaking so maybe that was just indicating coolant loss?
does the temp sender effect gauge aswell?
So I am wondering what colour wire should go to it?
Also it is a 87 van but the water pump I needed was a pre 85 one, probable engine change in past?

It is a 1.9 watercooled many thanks

are you referring to the sender on the left of the housing, this I believe is for the fuel injection if fitted, the gauge will probably be connected to the sender at the back of the housing, there should be two wires both connected to the 7 pin junction box in the engine compartment, not sure without checking drawings which pins.

Great thanks for reply, I havn't been able to find info on it so if not needed because of no fuel injection that gives me something to go on.
I havnt noticed the other wires will look tomorrow. Didn't notice them when changing water pump I only noticed oil pressure wires.
I have now found a random thin brown wire coming from the left by the immobiliser, I think someones been fiddling in there before maybe a replacement engine.

Thermostat area on early dg is at rear of vehicle and housing is metal, wire you need for the temp guage is yellow red and the sensor has a single pin where a spade slides on.

late dg thermostat area is towards the front of vehicle and thermostat housing is plastic, it has two pin sensor with a plastic plug on the loom.

there is also the thermoswitch for the carb heater, I wonder if you are confusing them, get a picup to be sure.

Thanks for reply, it is a early model metal housing at rear of vehicle.
There is a sender on left side of housing with no wire and none hanging round near by. there is a brown wire that goes down below water pump to oil buzzer pressure switchy thingy ( that has a lose connection im trying to sort...I hope!)
and a brown wire that goes under the engine to a sender im not sure I think that is another oil pressure tingy? I need to go look for another temp sender behind the thermostat as nicbee says? and not to worry about the other sender on the left of housing because that would be for fuel injected model.
correct?
Coolant gauge done the job when water pump went mind...
Cant see any red yellow wires only in junction box, I think some ones snipped and attached new wires..
brown wire coming from about where coil(need to look that up) is in picture...maybe that's what I thought immobiliser was.
Ill have another look tomorrow... everything is working I was just concerned that sender has no wire.
many thanks for help

As far as I know they didn't make injected engines in europe for the early dg or even 2.1 but I may be wrong

Do you have a wire of any colour on this sender ( can also be seen in pic above)

That's for bearing with me.
Here are some pictures I have taken but in the dark.
The new shiny sender on the left of themo stat housing is the one in question with no wire.
There are brown wires, 3 of them one an earth as you suggested, one go underneath to engine to what I believe is an oil sensor( to be corrected) and on in going down to back of the pulleys to oil buzzer sensor.
Unfortunatly Im having problems with the buzzer I think I disturbed its fine balance when I removed it when changing water pump.

There is also a load of wiring not connected to anything by what I think is the immobiliser, Im sure this is nothing to do with the main wiring of the van and pehaps for the immobiliser or towbar but unsure

wow that looks an odd way to cut in a old engine, when its light get some better pics up of what they have done, get the whole engine bay in.

anyway go looking for the red/yellow wire, its in the back box the other end is somewhere, possibly tucked back into the sleeve from the black box.

yes there are two brown wires to the oil pressure switches but there are the only unusual earths as they are switched earths, they actually connect from the switches to the oil pressure circuits in the loom ( yellow buzzer, blue/black light)
but do you have an early engine with one switch or a late engine with two switches, second switch is under the waterpump if fitted go look for it.

third wire may be earth to engine.

Actually I bet you have a late plastic thermostat housing at the rear and there is no thermostat in that metal housing
if so the sensor will be connected in the plastic thermostat hosusing (hence why the guage works)and somebody has just bodged an early pump and housing on the front perhaps becuse they had one spare... yee hawww

In regards to water pump I ordered a water pump from europarts in relation to my reg number but when it came it was the wrong one, I had the order an older pre 85 one from discount centre
There is a thermostat in the metal housing because I thought I would test it in boiling water when it was off just out of curiousity

May be you have two thermostats, go looking for a housing at the rear or take another photo of the whole engine bay, perferably in focus :D
