The engine code that will tell you if it's a 2.1 or a 1.9 is stamped on the case at the bottom of the cylindrical vertical black plastic breather tower, next to the alternator. You usually have to remove years of grime to see it !

1.9 will be DF, DG (most common) or MV
2.1 will be DJ (most common), EY or DH

1.9 are DF, DG, EY,SP with carburettors. DH, GW with fuel injection
2.1 are DJ, MV, SS, SR. with injection.

And even then the code may not help, 2.1 engines tended to throw connecting rods wrecking the crankcase, which are now in short supply so where rebuilt into 1.9 cases

Hi again. I'm now a full member and decided it's time for an update. Firstly, thanks again for all the info everybody gave me. Armed with all this info I offered the seller £1500 less than he was asking which he reluctantly accepted about 10 days later. However I had seen another one advertised on this forum for less money and decided to buy it. I brought it home yesterday from Potters Bar (M25 J23) to SW Wales - a total of 240 miles. It ran like a well oiled sewing machine and didn't miss a beat. So I'm now the proud owner of a 1986 T25 Caravelle 2.1 GL.It has had some restoration work done on it in the past and now needs some tidying up but is almost rust free and the simple motorhome interior needs modernising. I's currently red with a cream roof and cream centre stripe but will most probably end up a deep metallic red with a gold roof. (It was originally gold and is still that colour inside). The plan is to use it mostly as my daily driver and only take it off the road when I'm ready to respray it.
I'm fairly mechanically minded but I have no doubt that I'll be on here frequently asking for lots of advice so be patient with this newbie.

As a Triumph Stag owner you will no doubt be "hot" on keeping the cooling system in good order, that will stand you in good stead with the T25...

Hi Marlinowner, Yes I'm well on top of the Stag cooling - or should that be overheating - problems. Touch wood mine is OK but I do tend to drive it with one eye on the temperature guage, as I did with the VW on the journey home.
