Replacement Heater Blower Motor LHD/RHD differences?

Hi all,

I have just stripped the dash out to un-seize the heater blower motor in my '83 Caravelle, but its too far gone, despite copious amounts of freeing oil (even drilled the hole in the dome as per the wiki) its still far too stiff so methinks a new motor is the only way forward. Have found two places online here where I can hopefully get one in the morning, but one site has me scratching my head, it lists a Febi Bilstein unit p/n 18780 and states its for LHD only, searches on the web also show this p/n as LHD only.
Now unless I'm missing something, the same motor should fit LHD and RHD as to me it seems the blower box is made to be adaptable to both, so I assume this LHD only bit is in error. Am I missing something?

I know you're looking for a definitive answer on this and all I can do is agree with your statement...until seeing your comment I would have said ALL use the same blower motor.
BrickWerks does overnight..bit late now but you have it sorted already.
Just be aware that the extra load from the seizing motor may have melted the rotary switch or at least the switch wiring and connections. Switches cost under £6.00 and so are worth replacing...you may need to repair and replace one or two of the terminals etc.

Is it because it may be fitted on the left hand side of the heater box on lhd models therefore it would run in reverse if fitted on the right? If that is the case the lhd one may well work just by reversing the connections. This is purely conjecture - someone may well know for sure.

I have just ordered a motor from Brickwerks but unfortunately they state that any orders placed between Xmas and new year won't be shipped until next week.

There has only been one heater motor for LHD/RHD but it also fit other VW Audi models which are handed.

There was a post a while back on here from someone who fitted a new heater motor only to find it ran the wrong way. This RHD / LHD issue was not mentioned at the time, but might well have had summat to do with it. Suggest you make sure yours runs the right way before re-assembling. If wrong, reverse the connections, as OBG says.

Well the two suppliers who allegedly had it in stock, didn't. I eventually sourced one from vwspares.ie and despite them not actually being open yesterday, they very obligingly arranged a time for me to come and collect it , plus they were cheaper than all the other suppliers here!

The part they supplied was also the same Febi p/n and it fits perfectly.
Regarding the wiring, the only issue was mine had the terminals (one male, one female) directly on the motor whilst the Febi unit has two males in a block connector on a short flylead (possibly suited to direct connection on later models?)
I checked the required polarity by running the motor directly from a battery first to ensure I got the correct direction of rotation, in my case I had to connect my existing yellow positive to the motors Red with white stripe wire, whilst my existing brown matched to the brown on the motor. I fitted a matching block connector to my existing wiring and all is looking good.

I also took the opportunity to renew most of the foam seals on the air control flaps as they were turning to dust as soon as I looked at them, some closed cell foam I had (leftover timber floor underlay) was just the right thickness for the job

Now I've to go out and refit the air box & dash etc....
