Low profile...175mm high (be careful as 190mm standard height won't fit with the lid down in a VW battery box)

VW originally fitted something like a 54ah but to be honest..go the extra mile and fit something a little bigger like a CODE Type 100 which are generally 70 - 72ah. All I've listed are 175mm low profile so will leave a clearance on the battery lid....still make sure you use covers or insulate above the positive terminal with some old innertube etc.
The higher capacity (and the all important CCA..cold cranking amps) means you will have more in reserve. However, air cooled engines are fairly low compression and so don't take much to spin...a standard Type 065 will be fine in most cases buying bigger is peace of mind.

Something like:

Cheapest but not a particularly well known brand:

Correct battery is the 065 code ( or equiv for where you are buying it from )
However the 075 , 085 and 095 fits and is slightly better capacity and slightly physically bigger.

Yup...190mm
So whatever you get make sure its height is 175mm (low profile)

Martin has rightly suggested that certain 096 batteries are not suitable.
And the code 100 has replaced them

Well it has a four year warranty so it can't be that bad...and with the extra capacity it shouldn't ever come close to slowing up, even on the coldest of mornings.
