None VW engine shake

Post by kevtherev »

As the road speed increases the gear stick rocks slightly forwards and backwards, the faster you go the faster the oscillation.
Next day it's gone.
two days later it might come back for a journey...and go again next day.
This is where I am at a loss.
So on checking ..
I saw that the gearbox mount was shot to bits so I changed it to a polyflex... much better but the oscillation remains although a little diminished now.
I am struggling to understand what from the road wheels through to the diff would rock an engine
I see that one drive shaft passes through the gearbox mounting assembly.

Any thoughts would be most welcome

Have you had new tyres need which need balancing? We had new tyres fitted on our car and the fitter didn't balance them which led to oscillations through the steering whenever we went over 55. Once the tyres were balanced it went away again

no movement at the steering wheel when the stick oscillates.

which engine? most of these have a rear mounting bush which stops the engine osscillating too much back and forth. These go soft with time. My citroen C4 does it to some extent 1.6hdi. Nothing to worry about unless you fancy changing the rear mounting bush.

My thoughts exactly .... if one mount is perished the other will probably have done the same mileage and was made from the same French crap rubber. One hopes you aren't expecting VW levels of build quality ? :pimp :rofl These things are pretty much disposable after 8 - 10 years.

Is it a certain speed Kev?

I had similar on my old Citroen ZX and it turn out to be driveshaft releted. Inner CV joint I think.Worth a look if it's not the other mount

Well like I said I changed the mount concerned (rear) and fitted a polyflex.. although there's less oscillation it still remains.
I might change the top mount then..cheap enough

To describe it again..
At slow speed the stick moves forward and back about 4mm, as the speed increases this movement gets faster, becomes a vibration throughout the whole car.
Clutch engaged or not makes no difference.
Pretty sure you're right Windy, I think this is drive shaft related. The shaft passes through the rear mount from the diff, it then couples to the CV.
What gets me is it can stop doing this oscillation, the stick goes rock solid with no movement, then without warning it starts up.

I agree with Windysurfer. Inner CV joints. I had exactly that problem on a 306 a few years back.

I have a 306 so I'm used to the many noises of a Peugeot. .. would guess it could be one or more of the rubber bushes on the front wishbones.... either the p bushes or the front ones.
