Hi,
Cheers for the welcomes and advice. Finally had some time to learn about the van better today. So I replaced the rocker gaskets to try and fix my oil leak. However the near side cover now pours out! The gasket I removed had lots of sealant type stuff in there but I just put a dry, little bit oily, cork gasket in. Should I use something to stick the gasket? Does it matter which way around the cover goes on? See the pic of the leaky one. How do i tell if it is a rocker leak or push rod leak?

In good order, rocker covers take the use of a spanner to lever the cip down. Over time this spring becomes weak - evident when you can pull it over easily by hand. Presumably this is why the sealant was used as it leaked before. Replace the rocker covers - or springs, whichever is available. You should not need sealant.
I should add, it can be tricky to get covers on square if you're not used to it. Check they are fully seated all round and watch the gasket doesn't move - they can.

GSF rocker covers, springs and gaskets are quite adequate ... they used to be VW marked ... not sure now.

Thats good to know. Not touched mine since I had the vehicle ten years ago (had no need to) but when I do I'll just fit new covers. They're a pig to seal when they're old and they take a hell of a hammering underneath.
