Do only headlight switches without the dim/dip function light up when the ignition is turned on? Your diagram doesn't show the illumination that the haynes version (without dim/dip) does.
My van was registered in december '85 and so it should have the late cooling system however it has the early one so what really defines what system is used? As it appears to not be strictly by time.

None of them had illuminated switches.

Depends on when the vehicle was made not when it was registered. It was not unknown especially converted campers to be over a year old before they hit the road.
85 and 86 and to a limited extent 87 are the crossover years when most of the changes took place. Cooling systems changed in 86. But during those years vehicles still turned up with older parts when they should have had the newer parts fitted when they where using up stocks.

My mates 82 did, but it didn't have dim dip. Switch has a hole on the back for a bulb holder on mine but no bulb or wiring for it. Golfs of the same era had light up switches.
