Smokin' SB

Post by Aberdeenbus »

Guys

I have has this question up over on the Yard and MrHutch :ok amongst others has been most helpful, I'm just wondering if any of the sages here can help.

The bus is running a 1.6TD SB code engine with a Saab intercooler behind the nearside rear lights. This has worked flawlessly for the last 3 years and 12000miles.

It has never skipped a beat, starts on the dot never needing the cold start lever and apart from a slight puff on start up a total non-smoker, the only replacement recently was a new oem alternator.

All of a sudden last week halfway through a journey its black smoke time, but only under load.

Its absolutly black (almost smokescreen quantities) not blue or white which I’m guessing is over fuelling at some point

I replaced all the filters, checked the intakes for blockages/restrictions, bypassed the intercooler to check for a boost leak, all good.

Checked the LDA, the small hose which goes to it from the manifold looked a little perished replaced that and cracked the LDA open to check the diaphragm, all good in there too, no sticking pin and no holes or tears in the diaphragm.

The only thing I noticed was a smidgen of oil in the pipes to the intercooler from the turbo, a very very thin black film which I’m guessing is unconnected.

The smoke is black and sooty, and the injector pump has never been
modified or flickered with in anyway

Guys any experiences or ideas what to check next?

Cheers
Si
