manual transmission breather

Post by islandboy »

I have 1.9 DG Petrol 4 speed.

Noticed a lot of oily crud all over bottom half of transmission housing. Does this engine have an atmospheric breather ? If it has, whereabouts is it as I want to check this is clear and clean before I consider whether any seals have gone.

Many thanks

What you are seeing is the crank shaft oil seal in the bell housing failing to hold in the oil
there is no breather in the gearbox
The bell housing is dry and has a drain hole at the bottom for dust and oil

Thanks Kev

I have started to hear a transmission whine thats why I had a look underneath to see if anything was up.

The crankshaft seal sounds like a major job . I only have basic mechanical skills.

Surely there is a breather at the top of the case at the nose end , small hole on the nearside - there is on both the ones that I have.

I read on another link that if this breather is blocked, then oil can find its way out, and sometimes, just clearing this breather, can solve the oil leak, or am I being too simple/hopeful ?
