Personally I've always weighed up the state of the clutch when its out. I alternate between complete clutch (and Lux reckoned the better) and just a friction plate if release bearing seems in good nick. Lot cheaper. Never ever had any issues doing that in nearly 30 years. Garages will always change the lot for new because they don't want it coming back but old-school mechanics inspect.
Generally if the clutch fingers aren't damaged or worn to wafer thin, face in good condition and no noise or play in release bearing, you only need the plate - under £50. The paranoid will rightfully replace all.
